After MidKnight by Em Petrova

Carissa has seen plenty of pain in her young life. At seventeen her fiancé Roades left her and her parents were killed in a car accident. Fast forward a few years and her life has not really improved. Hurricane Maria has ravage her island and left it in ruins, the clinic she works at as a nurse has closed, her brother has returned to his horrible criminal ways and she finds herself trading drugs with the criminals just to treat her people in her make shift clinic. In her desperation she calls on the only man she thinks can help her, Roades. Roades is feeling lost, not knowing what to do with his time when he receives Carissa’s call for help. When the call is abruptly lost, he knows what his purpose is during this down time. He must go and find Carissa and provide whatever help she needs. Once he finds her he realizes that the love he had for Carissa as a seventeen year old kid has not died, but just laid dormant waiting for him to find her again. He spends his time trying to get her brother to leave his criminal path and walk on the side of good again, but Hernan is not listening and time is running out.

***Spoiler***. I really appreciate that Em Petrova kept true to the nature of the characters and did not make Henan suddenly realize the error of his ways. There was no way a man that was willing to do what he had been doing was ever going to turn back to the side of good. The control and power was just to much of what he wanted in order to just give it up because a man had talked him into it. I appreciated that the author was willing to end in a not so fairytale way but by trashing Carissa’s little homemade clinic and killing her brother. I would have had a hard time beliving the ending if these things didn’t happen, it would have gone against Carissa’s nature if it had been done any other way.

In closing I would have to say that this was a very interesting read. It kept my attention and kept the pages turning. The characters were well developed and never deviated from their established personalities even if to push the story into a predetermined path. This one is well worth your time and money.
